When is a poodle beside a motorcycle more than a poodle beside a motorcycle? The Institute for Comparative Ulmen Studies devotes an entire textbook to this question, with all the methodological rigour that such a sensitive field of research undoubtedly demands.

Across thirteen chapters, the discipline develops its terminology, history and scholarly controversies: from the Knoll Note of 1897 and the principium birotale to stationary versus moving motorcycles, the White Poodle Controversy, the Ulmen Angle and evidence levels U0 to U4. It also examines doubtful sightings, forgeries and the exclusion of bicycles, e-bikes, scooters and other inadmissible substitutes for motorcycles with admirable thoroughness.

The volume contains 26 etching plates: twenty illustrate case constellations, while six venture beyond the usual observational settings in the chapter Art and Speculative Borderline Cases. It also includes seven schematic figures, eight tables, a standardised sighting protocol, a concise Latin nomenclature, selected historical sightings, a negative catalogue of related devices, examination questions and a bibliography.

The volume concludes with A Note for the Record.
